Red Sox, Pirates trade pitchers in offseason trade
The Boston Red Soc and Pittsburgh Pirates are in agreement about the trade, according to FanSided’s Robert Murray.
“The Pittsburgh Pirates are acquiring right-hander Chase Shugart in a trade with the Boston Red Sox for right-hander Matt McShane, according to sources familiar with the deal. Shugart was recently designated for assignment by the Red Sox,” Murray wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
The trade won’t make or break a single ball. However, both teams are adding a pitcher who could impact their roster at some point down the road.
Red Sox, Pirates trade as offseason continues
Shugart, 28, made his MLB debut in 2024 and appeared in six games, posting a 4.15 ERA. He had been in the Red Sox organization since 2018. However, Boston decided to designate him for assignment on Wednesday. The Pirates eventually decided to acquire him via trade.

McShane, 22, spent just one season in the Pirates organization. However, he has yet to record any stats.
The The Red Sox had a busy offseason. The The Pirates also made some moves likewise. Boston wants to compete with the best teams in the American League East, while Pittsburgh hopes to establish itself as a contender in the National League Central.
Neither team has reached the postseason in 2024. The Red Sox are closer to contention than the Pirates, but Pittsburgh plays in a winnable division. Meanwhile, the AL East features potential World Series contenders like the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles.
Still, Boston could make a big jump in 2025 after a respectable offseason thus far. The team is still looking to make more additions. The Pirates may still be a few years away from serious World Series championship contention, but they could make the postseason sooner rather than later.
