Reggie Miller’s bold claim that Conn Knueppel passed Stephen Curry

Is Charlotte Hornets newcomer Kon Knuepel next Stephen Curry? Reggie Miller he seems to think so.

Through the first 17 games of his NBA career, Knuepel made 63 3-pointers, far more than any other rookie and good enough for fourth in the league. And that shooting ability at age 20, Miller thinks, could one day help Knuepel unseat Curry as the most prolific scorer in NBA history.

“He is.” winning Rookie of the Year,” Miller said of Knuepel on ‘The Dan Patrick Show.’” “And I dare say this, I dare say this: Is Stephen Curry going to be a little nervous in about 15 years?”

“Oh, with a total of three points?” Patrick asked.

“Yes,” Miller replied. “Just go back and look at Steph’s first two or three years, in terms of three-pointers and what Conn did this year. Just look at their first years. But here’s the problem, you’ve got to stay healthy — longevity. You’ve got to stay healthy. 17 years, 18 years for Stephen Curry. Can Conn Knueppel do that over a long period of time.”

Knueppel is currently shooting 8.5 3-pointers per game at a 43.8% clip, which if he keeps that up over a full 82-game season, would put him at around 304 3-pointers for the year.

For reference, Curry made 317 combined 3-pointers between his first and second NBA seasons. Including his third season, in which he was limited to 26 games due to injury, Curry had just 372 career 3-pointers. Aside from 2019-20, he hasn’t had a season in which he made fewer than 212 three-pointers, and in his unanimous MVP season in 2015-16, he made more three-pointers that year (402) than he did in his first three seasons combined.

Of course, that sharp shooting rocketed Curry to the all-time 3-point list from the previous year until December 2021, when he passed Ray Allen and stood alone as the league’s leading scorer. He passed Miller, who held the 3-point record for nearly 13 years before Allen passed him in 2011.

Since breaking the record four years ago, Curry has put considerable distance between himself and anyone who even thought about catching him; he currently has 4,131 3-pointers made894 more than James Harden and 1,158 more than Allen.

In order for Knuepel to pass Curry’s current total in 15 years, to which he will surely add at least a few more years, Knuepel would have to average about 275 three-pointers per season. To realistically pass Curry, who very realistically could surpass the 5,000 mark before retirement, Knueppel would have to make more than 333 3-pointers per year over 15 seasons.

Knueppel, who had seven against the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday, will have a chance to add to his scoring total tomorrow night when the Hornets take on the New York Knicks.
