Rich Paul admits he told LeBron James mid-game to run certain plays

“When I make eye contact with my guys, if they have an opportunity, they’re going to come,” Paul said. “Bron came over and I told him what I saw and if he saw the same thing.

Paul explained that he noticed how James consistently drew more defenders on the live dribble offense. That gravity created opportunities for others, especially Luka Doncic, to find clean looks without initiating fouls.

How the Lakers executed Paul’s proposal

Paul recalled advising James to briefly take Doncic off the ball to force defensive reactions. With less than two minutes left in the third quarter, the Lakers were leading the charge. James ran into the lane, drew a double team and threw the ball to Doncic’s elbow. The result was a wide-open three-pointer that energized the building.

The exchange did not end there. Late in the fourth quarter, Paul shared another idea, this time when Deandre Ayton set a screen to release Doncic. James held the ball, turned his attention to the corner and believed that the action would develop. The play eventually led to an extra pass and another 3-pointer by Doncic that pushed the Lakers up by six with less than two minutes left.

The sequence highlighted how awareness and trust can elevate execution, even when the suggestion comes from an unexpected source. The Lakers closed out a 120-114 victory, and James finished the night with 26 points, 10 assists, seven rebounds and a steal.
