RJ Barrett trade idea, Raptors offered to Pelicans

The The Toronto Raptors performed well this season, he is currently 29-19 heading into Wednesday night’s home game against the New York Knicks. With the team performing far beyond expectations, some have speculated that the Raptors could be significant buyers at the upcoming NBA trade deadline, which is set for February 5th.
Brett Siegel of ClutchPoint reported on this recently discussions that The Raptors played the New Orleans Pelicans, centering wing of RJ Barrett.
“While the Bulls were talking to the Pelicans about both Misa and Zion Williamson, the Raptors were focused on (Yves) Misa and Trey Murphy III,” Siegel said. “Toronto has been aggressive in the trade market this season and floated the idea of packaging RJ Barrett, Ochai Agbadji and draft picks to acquire both Missy and Murphy from New Orleans, which sources said the Pelicans were reluctant to do.”
Murphy III has truly been one of the hottest names on the market this year, with teams raving about his ability to knock down deep threes, put the ball down the floor and play tough defense, all key skills for the modern era of positionless basketball.
Meanwhile, Barrett is enjoying a strong year for the Raptors in 2025-26 when healthy, which the team apparently hoped would be enough to entice the Pelicans into a trade. However, it doesn’t appear that Barrett, Agbaji and the draft capital were enough to bring in both Murphy and Missy, who would help the Raptors empty their frontcourt rotation.
Still, the Raptors will likely continue to explore trade scenarios until the deadline as they look to take advantage of the Eastern Conference’s wide-open landscape.
They will next take the floor on Wednesday night at home against Barrett’s former team, the New York Knicks.
