Robert Spillane returns to practice after pre-Super Bowl ankle injury

The New England Patriots are currently preparation for the biggest scene in sports, but all eyes are on the training ground. As Super Bowl With LKS approaching, the Patriots got a huge dose of adrenaline on Thursday when linebacker Robert Spillane returned to the practice field.

After sitting out Wednesday’s session with an ankle injury, Spillane was officially listed as a limited participant. For a defense tasked with slowing down the Seattle Seahawks’ high-powered offense, seeing their defensive heart in the dugout is exactly what head coach Mike Vrabel needed.

However, the news wasn’t all great in Foxborough. While Spillane has moved forward, star rush Harold Landry has taken a step back. Landry, who was limited on Wednesday with a knee problem, was a non-participant (DNP) on Thursday.

If Landry can’t go Sunday, the pressure on Spillane to solidify the front seven increases tenfold. Landry has been a nightmare for quarterbacks all year, and his absence would leave a huge void in the passage of Patriots.

On the offensive side of the ball, things look a lot more stable. Rookie sensation Drake Maie was a full participant despite a lingering right shoulder injury. May was surgical in the postseason, throwing for 533 yards and four touchdowns to punch New England’s ticket to the Super Bowl. Having him at 100% is a basic requirement for the Patriots to lift the Lombardi trophy.

The offensive line remains a little tight, with tackles Morgan Moses and Thayer Munford Jr. both have limited sessions. Protecting May is the number one priority, so their status on Friday will be the final piece of the puzzle.
