Rudy Gobert-style development for Joan Beringer
That was over twelve years ago! He arrived in the NBA from Shole and still a little weak to deal with the sizes of the league, Rudy Gobert landed with the Jazz, who took the time to develop him behind the scenes during his freshman year, turning him into the dominant defender he later became.
Saint-Quentinois’ “process” was mainly aimed at strengthening his muscles and allowing him to cope in a completely new environment. It’s somewhat of the same path his compatriot and Minnesota teammate is about to take, Joan Beringer.
Next step: The G-League
Even if the rookie was interesting in the Summer League At just 18 years old and he’s proven to his advantage with his unfailing commitment almost every time he’s entered the game in the NBA, Minnesota will also give his nugget time to develop, without pressure.
As such, Joan Behringer has been out for two weeks, and should probably bolster the Iowa Wolves in the G-League soon.
“He’s on the right track”his coach Chris Finch said in mid-November. “For now, it’s a bonus to be able to give him playing time. We’re seeing him getting more comfortable with the speed of the game, the reads, the physicality… He just needs practice. We’re thrilled with his progress and we’re going to continue to move him forward slowly. He’ll probably go to Iowa at some point so he can really practice and play longer. This experience and exposure is very important for him when he comes back.”
As she waits to return to the light of the NBA floor, Joan Beringer works in the shadows and learns the tricks of the trade from her elders.
“I would say that I work on my routine, but also on my way of working and that I am a true professional”, he told RG.org. “I really learn from everyone in the team. Everyone is very kind and helps me a lot”.
Rudy Gobert, the perfect guardian angel
The interior is therefore working hard on physics, tactics and what it needs to improve on both sides of the pitch. Whether it’s the attack, focus for a moment on your game in front of the basket, and of course the defense.
“First of all, my defense: how to be present in defense. I always try to be good in my role. To play five, six, seven minutes, and the coach encourages me in that direction.” he continued.“I try to be present in defense and to be good in all defensive aspects. I put all my energy on the field and with that energy I influence the game.”
Among the Wolves veterans following him, the presence of Rudy Gobert is clearly a big plus for him, and not just on the defensive side.
“Just his defense, he’s one of the best defenders in the league.”he added. “His way of reading the game, his feel for the game, and he’s a friend, so he can help me on and off the court. That’s a bonus for me. I really appreciate that.”
Rudy Gobert takes his role to heart, one who no doubt would have loved to have had a French veteran guide him at his age. After more than two months of cooperation, the results are already here, and the future looks promising.
“He’s getting more comfortable”his eldest recognized. “ He works hard every day. He has already established a bond with our players. I tell him that even if he only plays three minutes, he has to be ready for those three minutes and make an impact on the game. He is improving and feeling more and more comfortable. It’s fun to see him evolve. He just turned 19, so it’s still early, but he has the right attitude (…) I’m happy and excited to see him play. The fact that he is playing with experienced players is great for his development. He’s learning to make screens, to take advantage of what his teammates are doing. All these things will be important for his career.”
