San Diego follows up on the signing of Michael King by bringing in a KBO infielder

The The San Diego Padres have beefed up their pitching rotation by signing a $75 million contract with Michael King. Still, the Padres are far from assembling their 2026 roster.

Now, San Diego signed infielder Sung-mun Song, via FanSided’s Robert Murray. The financial terms of the deal are not yet known and the physical is still pending.

Song played nine seasons in the KBO, and spent the last five with the Kivum Heroes. Throughout his KBO career, Song hit .283 with 80 home runs, 454 RBI and 25 steals. His work over the past two seasons has certainly caught the Padres’ eye.

In 2024, the infielder posted career highs with a .340 batting average and 104 RBIs, while adding 19 home runs and 21 stolen bases. Song followed that up and hit a career-high 26 home runs and stole a career-high 25 stolen bases while hitting .315 and driving in 90 runs. Now, Song is ready to try his hand at MLB.

The infielder played all over the diamond in the KBO, seeing time at first, second and third base. With Manny Machado at third and Jake Cronenworth starting, Song could be the leader in the clubhouse to open the year at second base. Especially with current incumbent Luis Araez currently looking for his next team in free agency.

If it is The Padres should have re-signed ArraezThe song would move into a service role. It wouldn’t be surprising to see new manager Craig Stammen move him around the field because of his versatility.

No matter where he plays, Song has to deliver. He has proven to be a dynamo in the box over the last two seasons in the KBO. As he transitions to the MLB, the infielder can’t miss.
