San Jose makes final decision on Michael Misa for World Juniors

The San Jose Sharks prepare for the playoffs at the start of the 2025-26 NHL season. They have been in deep rebuilding for years, but the young players are finally clicking, namely Maclin Celebrini. But the newest member of the pipeline hasn’t popped, so he’ll get a great opportunity. The Sharks will release Michael Misa will play for Team Canada at the World Junior Championships this month, according to Sportsnet’s Sam Cosentino.

“Despite missing the start of Hockey Canada’s training camp, Michael Misa will suit up for his country at this year’s tournament in St. Paul, Minn. Sportsnet can confirm that the San Jose Sharks intend to release the 18-year-old to Canada on Wednesday. Hockey Canada originally announced Dec. 12, and the day to stay with the San Jose Shark was the day after San Jose. the start of training camp,” Cosentino said.

Misa was the second overall pick in the 2025 NHL Draft after scoring a ridiculous 134 points in 65 games in the OHL. He hasn’t had as much success in the NHL, with just three points in seven games. The injury sent him to the AHL and cost him time during training camp in Canada.

Mass will be immediately entered in the top line of Canada. Top 2026 NHL Draft prospect Gavin McKenna he’ll probably be there, too, despite a rough season at Penn State. Other 2025 first-rounders Porter Marton, Caleb Desnoyers and Keshawn Acheson are projected to be on the team.

Sharks fans should be excited to watch Misa regain his confidence at the World Junior Championships. He dominated the juniors and should be a big part of San Jose’s core moving forward. Just because it hasn’t happened yet doesn’t mean it won’t happen soon at the NHL level.

The Sharks host the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night.
