Schottenheimer won’t single out the defense after 44 against the Broncos

Before Denver, the Cowboys owner was already selling a long view of his first-year head coach. Jerry Jones said he sees “value in someone who’s never done it before,” praising Brian SchottenheimerThe hunger and “osmosis” of great sticks, even comparing that blade to Jimmie Johnson’s early drive.
Jones doubled down after the Week 7 win over Washington, crediting Schottenheimer’s hands-on work on both sides of the ball, noting that the defense has “no way to go but up” as Dallas entered Week 8 leading the NFL in yards allowed.
After a 44-24 loss in Denver, Schottenheimer he was not interested in the blame game. “When you look at it, I’m not just going to start with defense,” he said. “I don’t think any of us have trained and played well enough. Asked if the unit needed outside help, he kept the focus inward: “At the end of the day, I think we have enough good players. I don’t think we played well tonight.” All via ESPN.
That tone matched the owner’s pregame message: Emphasize execution and teaching over spray-painted scapegoats. It also acknowledged the obvious: Dallas was outplayed throughout. Denver hit explosives, controlled leverage situations and turned a close first half into a breakout game.
Schottenheimer’s refusal to isolate one phase echoes what the players and staff reiterated last week: Complementary football is non-negotiable if Dallas wants to stay in power come November.
of course Jones still left the door open for staffjust not because of one bad night. After the Broncos, he said a potential addition would be evaluated “on the merits … next week or the week after (and long-term),” adding that Sunday’s result “will not affect” the trade decision.
He wondered aloud if “one better player” could help, and also said the Cowboys are “more than that away” and closer to simply doing better on defense. That logic, as some around the league have noted, helps explain why Dallas was comfortable moving Micah Parsons away rather than extending him, and why any move now has to be evaluated properly rather than reactionarily.
Big picture, Jones’ comparison invites scrutiny just as the schedule tightens. Schottenheimer’s position after 44 against says the same thing in a different way: fix the details, not blame. The next challenge for the Cowboys will be against the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9.
