Sean Miller gets real with Longhorns ‘virus’ after loss

The Texas Longhorns walked out of Rupp Arena with another close loss on wednesday nightfell 85-80 to Kentucky in a game that once again highlighted a recurring problem under first-year head coach Sean Miller. While the Longhorns showed competitiveness throughout the contest, Miller made it clear afterward that one fundamental flaw continues to undermine his team.
Miller gave a brutally honest assessment of what he believes is holding Texas back. Speaking after the game, he posed that question as a self-inflicted problem rather than something caused by opponents or judging.
“What our team has, and this is a Texas problem, is we have a fouling virus, and it’s plagued us from the start of the first game until tonight. It’s not the officials. It’s not Kentucky. We’re going to see you through,” Miller said, via Jalen Brown of Orangebloods.com. “You describe a foul and the team I’m coaching will make it…I’m not kidding, the officiating was fine. It was called properly. We fouled. Two last fouls in the last minute and a half, two minutes, one and a half court, and one under five seconds where you just stay down. And if he makes the shot, we have to play without defense.
The numbers backed up Miller’s frustration. Texas committed 23 fouls, sending Kentucky to the free throw line 35 times. The Wildcats made 30 of those attempts, which was the deciding factor in a game that was tied 40-40 at halftime and swung late.
Miller later explained why fouling is especially detrimental to this particular roster, noting that Texas isn’t built to rely on turnovers to make up for mistakes.
“Our team isn’t really set up to turn you over. So if you don’t turn them over and foul them, it really makes it difficult to play defense,” Miller added. “If we would have played better, not only in this game, but also in some others, if we hadn’t fouled, we would have a couple more wins under our belts because we are not that far away. So my task is to continue to work, to develop, to teach, to stay at it and demand it, and to be more disciplined as we go forward.”
“We have a virus called fouling… we’ll send you out with a live s***.”

The loss dropped Texas to 11-8 overall and 2-4 in SEC play, with five of the eight Longhorns seeing the floor end with at least three fouls. emphasizing issues of discipline Miller stated. Texas now returns home with a chance to reset against the Georgia Bulldogs before a challenging road trip later in the month.
