Skip Bayless shot from Dallas, Niko Harrison

Dallas The Mavericks have officially fired general manager Nick Harrison on Tuesday. While most of the NBA world seems to agree that it was the best move since the Luka Doncic trade nine months ago, there are some who aren’t fans of the layoff. Draymond Green recently backed up Harrisondoc Skip Bailess went to X, formerly Twitter, call out Mavs for the decision.
“Firing Nick now is a stupid premature mindless overreaction to an early 3-8 record, just like Cooper Flagg he’s got his rookie legs under him, AD is getting ready to come back from pulling calves, and Kyrie is said to be back on schedule by midseason,” Bayless wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
It goes without saying, but Bayless is missing the bigger picture. Regardless of whether or not the Mavericks compete this season, the Doncic trade frustrated the entire fan base. Chants of “Fire Nico” are not uncommon to hear at the American Airlines Center in Dallas — not ideal for Cooper Flagg in his rookie year.
In the final minute of Monday’s 116-114 loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, there were loud cheers in the arena. Instead of consistent cheering for the team in that final minute, chants of “Fire Nico” were heard, which obviously didn’t help the players.
The move from Harrison is more than just a basketball move. It represents a fresh start for a franchise that has gone through adversity over the past nine months. The move won’t resolve the fallout from Doncic’s trade, but it will allow Flagg and his teammates to focus on basketball while playing at home — as opposed to fans chanting for the general manager to be fired.
