Sonny Gray praises new teammate Gareth Croce

The energy at Fenway Park got more exciting after that Sonny Gray has joined the Red Sox rotationdeciding to sign with this team in free agency. Now, the new Red Sox pitcher has spoken highly of the team’s ace Garrett Crochetaccording to NESN.

Gray stated that he believed Crochet to be the best pitcher in baseball. Last season, Crochet was a Cy Young considerationbut eventually lost it to Tariq Skubal. Crochet went 18-5 with a 2.59 ERA in 32 starts. In the end, it got him a lot of attention, as he led the Sox to the playoffs. Crochet then went 7 2/3 innings while allowing one earned run in a playoff victory over the New York Yankees.

Gray was 14-8 with a 4.28 ERA in 32 starts for the Sox last season. While it hasn’t been the most consistent season for the former All-Star, he’s pitched well enough to pique the Sox’s interest. The Red Sox lacked the depth beyond Crochet to survive the playoffs, which was another reason they pursued Gray.

Despite being the team’s best pitcher, Crochet has refined its arsenal and hoped to return even better than ever. Gray will join a rotation that also includes Ranger SuarezBrian Bello and Johan Oviedo. That’s a huge boon for a rotation that ranked 12th in starting staff ERA last season. Getting both Gray and Suarez should ease the pressure on Crochet. In particular, the additions could also help the Sox if they make the playoffs, allowing them to have better success against league powerhouses such as the Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays.
