Spigate may have cost Bill Belichick his first Hall of Fame spot
Many were shocked when the news came out Bill Belichick won’t be a Hall of Famer this summer, as he will have to wait another year to potentially be immortalized in Canton, Ohio. As Belichick transitioned from the NFL to college football with North Carolina, the latest reason he didn’t make the first attempt could be related to the cheating scandals he was a part of with New England Patriots.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who broke the news, the Spygate and Deflategate fraud scandals “came in consideration among the voters.” Additionally, one voter for former Buffalo Bills and Indiana Colts general manager Bill Polian, who is considered a rival to the Patriots, reportedly said Belichick should “wait a year” because of Spygate.
“The voter, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said Polian, an ardent Kraft fan and former general manager of the Buffalo Bills and Indianapolis Colts — the Patriots’ arch-rival during their dynasty — told some voters he believed Belichick should ‘wait a year’ before induction as penance for Spygate, which cost the team’s No. 20 draft pick. Schefter continued.
Bill Belichick reportedly believes ‘politics’ is what keeps him out of the HOF
As Belichick was a finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame this year in his first year as a draft pick, people were shocked to hear the news, as he has eight Super Bowls, seven with the Patriots and two with the New York Giants as a defensive coordinator.
He also has the second most wins in his career, behind only legendary Miami Dolphins head coach Don Shula, which leaves Belichick believing that “politics” is holding him back, not accomplishments.
“Another source familiar with Belichick’s thinking said, ‘Politics kept him away. He doesn’t believe this is a reflection of his accomplishments,'” Schefter wrote.
The longtime Hall of Fame voter would say it had to be “cheating” because “it bothered some guys.” It looks like more information will emerge as the summer approaches for the Hall of Famers.
