Stephon Castle becomes 100% realistic in defense of Shai Giljus-Alexander, Luka Doncic

San Antonio Spurs guard Stephen Castle he has the daunting task of defending two top scorers Los Angeles LakersAll-Star Luka Dončićand the Oklahoma City Thunder‘s All-Star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. Whenever the Spurs face the Lakers or Thunder, it’s his responsibility to stay in front of the NBA’s leading scorers. Castle is one of the most promising guards in the league because of his impressive two-way game.

He adds to the statistics as a scorer and an effective playmaker on one end of the floor, who can defend at a high level on the other hand. Castle talked about defending Doncic and Giljus-Alexander in their Spurs back-to-back games against the Lakers and Thunder, per ESPN’s NBA Today.

“I’m very proud of that. I look for those matchups. I wouldn’t want it any other way. I feel like I can be one of the best perimeter defenders in the league,” Castle said. “Day by day, I’m just trying to prove it.”

Castle played a significant role in the Spurs’ three straight wins over the Thunder in 12 days in December, including their Christmas showdown, which turned into a blowout win. Gilgeous-Alexander had 22 points on 7-of-19 shooting, including 1-for-6 from deep. In just his second season, Castle is having a breakout campaign for the Spurs.

In a 138-125 win against the Dallas Mavericks, he made NBA history by becoming the youngest NBA player to record a triple-double on 40/12/12. He finished with 40 points, 12 assists, 12 rebounds, three steals and one block.

As Warriors All-Star Stephen Curry recovers from a knee injury during the NBA’s big weekend, the veteran Spurs forward Harrison Barnes says Stephon Castle deserves All-Star consideration to replace SGA. Barnes also backed the other half of the Spurs backcourt in De’Aaron Fox as a second option.

Considering the Spurs have the second-best record in the Western Conference, Barnes says any guard should replace Curry.

“It would be criminal if he (Castle) and Fox didn’t look. We’re No. 2 in the West,” Barnes said. “I think because of what we’ve done, for the teams below us that have had two All-Stars, I don’t know a case if we’re talking about the impact of winning and playing high-level basketball, why any of them shouldn’t be drafted and/or considered for those spots.”

Although the NBA announced that Toronto Raptors forward Brandon Ingram will replace Curry, De’Aaron Fox will replace Bucks’ Giannis Antetokounmpo at Sunday’s All-Star Game
