Steve Kerr makes an irrefutable prediction of a record 73 wins
Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr thought the Oklahoma City Thunder would broke his regular season record of 73 wins, the best in NBA history, as he explained why the defending champions won’t be able to. That’s a tall order for any team, as the monotony of an 82-game season comes with unexpected setbacks, lingering injuries and constant ups and downs despite the Thunder’s impressive 24-1 mark through 25 games.
Kerr revealed that the Thunder convinced him of the Warriors’ 73-9 thrashing of 2016. the record would finally be broken a decade later, before Oklahoma City had a 6-6 stretch in December, he said, per Nick Friedel of the Athletics.
“I remember thinking at the time, ‘No way,'” Kerr said before Saturday’s game against the Charlotte Hornets. “And then, about a month ago, I thought he was going to be broken. And now, I don’t think there’s any chance that someone will screw it up again. It’s such a tough thing to do, but Oklahoma City looked like they were on their way to doing it. It’s so hard.”
“But the reason it’s so hard is you just have to have good health — you have to have a little bit of luck. And most teams probably won’t try that hard to get there. It’s so hard. I guess they’re not going to break.”
The 2015-16 Warriors broke the Bulls’ 1995-96 record of 72-10, which was thought to stand the test of time as the NBA’s best regular season record ever, until the Warriors broke it 20 years later.
The Thunder, coming off a 122-120 loss to the Miami Heat, would need to win the remaining 39 games of the regular season to match the Warriors’ 73 wins. The league-leading Thunder fell to 35-8.
Steve Kerr takes a look at the Warriors’ 73-game winning streak

While he is the head coach Steve Kerr was open about the Warriors’ championship oddshe, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green don’t look back on the team’s record 73 regular-season wins as some think. Perhaps memories of setting a record in the regular season, only to extend the Cavs’ 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals, make 2015-16 bitter.
“Never,” Kerr said of how often the 73-win record is mentioned. “We have a banner hanging in the facility commemorating the record, and, other than that, we never talk about it. It’s an incredible accomplishment. I mean, it’s just mind-boggling to think about winning that many games. I think my favorite stat from that whole period was — we went like 135 games without losing two in a row.
“Because losing two in a row in this league, it’s almost inevitable. Just with the way the schedule plays out and the injuries, everything else. So to go 130-plus games without losing two in a row was amazing. So, I’m really proud to be a part of that team, but I don’t spend a lot of time on that because I look back on Kerr.
The Warriors beat the Hornets 136-116 on Saturday.
