Suns’ Kevin Durant reveals ‘biggest impact’ of win over Wizards
As it is Phoenix Suns traveled to the nation’s capital to take on the Washington Wizards, they didn’t know it Kevin Durant would have the greatest impact. While he didn’t score as many points as Devin Booker in the 130-123 win, his mindset prevailed.
For starters, Durant returned home to Washington D.C. After the loss to the Atlanta Hawks, they traveled north and spent some time in D.C. The Suns star returned to his roots and rejoiced the things that are most important to him. He explained more to AZCentral’s Duane Rankin in the locker room after Thursday’s win.
“It’s nice to be home,” Durant said. “I haven’t been home since we last played here. I had to see my brother last night. Go to his house. Take a walk around the neighborhood. That probably affected me more than anything.”
Family above all else is a phrase that resonates around the world. It’s no different for Durant and his family. While his mom has been to some of his games this season, coming home is a special feeling. Besides, his mom has been in the middle of many superstar battles.
for example, Durant shared a touching moment with his mom after the Suns’ win in the NBA playoffs in 2023. The bond is as strong as it gets. However, seeing more of his family is also a special thing. He mentioned that he was back home for the first time since Phoenix played the Wizards last season. For Durant, that’s too long. Reuniting with friends and family is a special thing for one of the best to ever play.

Playing for your teammates, coaches, organization and fans is one thing. However, playing for your family and loved ones is a different feeling. Embracing the atmosphere and culture is something Durant has always been about. He loves his city and has quoted it on numerous occasions.
That includes sports teams, which is a funny coincidence this time of year. His Washington Commanders are in the NFC divisional round of the 2025 NFL playoffs. After a dramatic Wild Card victory, the franchise earned its first playoff win in 20 years.
Now, they will travel to Detroit to play the Detroit Lions. Interestingly, the Phoenix take on the Detroit Pistons on the same day. To accommodate the NFL’s divisional round, the NBA has announced that the Suns-Pistons game will be moved to a 4:00 PM EST kickoff.
He and Booker have been feuding back and forth since the Commanders won. in fact Booker and Durant even have a bet for the game. Even that gesture proves that Durant is the right fit for his team. Despite Washington’s fandom, it shows his support goes back to his community.
The next time the Suns will play the Wizards is on January 25th. Either part or all of the family could travel from Washington to see Durant play. Once again, there could be even more motivation for the multiple All-Star to show off in front of his friends and family. That extra motivation could be another spark Phoenix could feed off of heading into the All-Star break.
