Sydney Crosby of the Penguins scores a sweet re-direct goal for Team Canada against Switzerland

On the day Canada received a brief challenge from Switzerland in their Olympic hockey game, Sidney Crosby of the Pittsburgh Penguins scored a smart goal in the third period that helped his team to a 5-1 victory. Canada moved to 2-0 in the Olympic tournament and is well on its way to the quarterfinals.

The Canadian Olympic team relies on its superstars, and above all on its explosive forwards. Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, Nathan MacKinnon of the Colorado Avalanche and Macklin Celebrini of the San Jose Sharks played pretty much together on the same line for Team Canada, but Crosby is the captain team and was part of two previous gold medal winning teams in previous Olympic competitions.
Although Crosby is the oldest player on Canada’s hockey team, he is much more than a token player who made the team because of his past accomplishments. Maybe Crosby lost half a speed step, but his skill level is exceptional and he is capable they work low with high-level plays regularly giving Team Canada — and the Penguins — a significant lead.
Canada took a 2-0 lead midway through the first period on goals by McDavid and Thomas Harley, but Switzerland was able to stay in the game when Pius Suter was able to pounce on a rebound later in the opening stanza to beat goaltender Logan Thompson.
However, Maclin Celebrini, Crosby and MacKinnon were able to score to put the game out of Team Canada’s reach.
