The 76ers talked about trading the Grizzlies, but not for Ja Morant

The The Philadelphia 76ers were mostly a pleasant surprise so far this season, currently at 22-17 despite a recent road trip loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers in an exhaust way. The 76ers have seen great play from rookie VJ Edgecombe, and Joel Embiid and Paul George are starting to appear in the lineup more often as the season progresses.

With the NBA trade deadline approaching, some are wondering if Daryl Morey could try to make a deal to make Philadelphia even more competitive, and recently NBA insider Jake Fisher reported on one Western Conference team that Philadelphia has eyes on.

“Sources say the Sixers and Grizzlies had some level of trade discussions in mid-December…” Fisher reported at the urging of Marc Stein.

However, Fisher made it clear that these talks did not revolve around point guard Ja Morant, who the Grizzlies are now reported to be open to trading.

Fisher clarified that the trade talks between Memphis and Philadelphia “included issues around the edges.”

“If the Grizzlies end up needing a third team to help facilitate some of their active trade deals based on salary alignment, there is some recent synergy between Memphis and Philly that’s worth shedding,” he concluded.

All in all, it remains to be seen what kind of deal the Grizzlies and 76ers could work out that would benefit both teams.

Right now, the 76ers could use a little more depth on the wings, especially considering Paul George isn’t the player he once was and Kelly Oubre Jr. only recently returned to the lineup after an extended injury layoff.

Either way, the 76ers will look to get back into the win column Friday night for a rematch at home against the Cavaliers. Tipoff for that game is set for 7:00 PM ET from Philadelphia.
