The Astros’ Dana Brown makes a catch for Roki Sasaki
The Houston Astros looking to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season that saw them bounced out of the AL Wild Card district. To that end, they looked for a way, like many other teams in the MLB, to improve the roster in free agency by signing the 23-year-old Japanese phenom Roki Sasaki on the international free agency market – Make him subject to international bonus money rules and six years of team control.
But in the end, Sasaki decided to join his fellow Japanese stars Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto on the Los Angeles Dodgers, giving the reigning World Series champions another potential star for the long haul. The Astros weren’t really a serious contender for Sasaki, failing to land the top three preferred landing spots (Dodgers, San Diego Padres and Toronto Blue Jays), but general manager Dana Brown, at least for the moment, kept hope As for their chances of landing Sasaki thanks to their relationship with current stadium sponsor Daikin, according to KPRC 2 Houston’s Ari Alexander.
In mid-November, the Astros announced that they would rename the former minute park to Daikin Park, after Japan Industries, Ltd. agreed to a 15-year exclusive professional naming rights partnership with it. Alas, this partnership with Japan’s Gvac Giant is not too much of a factor in SASAKI’s decision.
Pitching remains a bit of a hot spot for the Astros; They still need depth to solidify the rotation behind Framber Valdez and Hunter Brown, and it’s unclear if Ronel Blanco can sustain a solid season in 2024. The offseason is far from over, though, although it’s not entirely clear how much room is left in their budget to make an impact addition.

The Astros have been so spoiled by their success over the past decade; They’ve either posted a winning record or made the playoffs in each of the last 10 seasons (doing so in nine of 10 years and the past eight campaigns). Anything short of another World Series title is a disappointment for this team, given their farm system is on fire.
Looks like it will soon lose Alex Bregman in free agencyAnd they said goodbye to Kyle Tucker, bringing in their long-term replacement at the hot corner in Isaac Paredes in the process.
