The Austin Reeves problem when it comes to the Giannis trade

The Los Angeles Lakers can dream entering the Giannis Antetokounmpo sweepstakes one day. NBA insiders, however, say there is one big obstacle blocking their way: Austin Reaves. As Jake Fisher writes, the Lakers simply lack the draft capital and comparable young talent to compete with teams like Atlanta. That is unless Milwaukee views Reaves as a Trae Young center who can become a perennial All-Star.

A problem Fisher shares? Reaves hit restricted free agency this summer. He is expected to draw maximum-level offers from rival teams. Any franchise trade for him this season would have to accept the risk of losing him in July. Young people, meanwhile, are seen as a far safer long-term asset. For now, that makes the Lakers one of the least viable suitors if the Giannis scenario ever materializes.

Milwaukee’s difficult 2025-26 campaign only added to the speculation around the league. The Bucks sit at 10-13. They sit near the basement of the Central Division despite another dominant start from Antetokounmpo. He is averaging about 28.9 points, 10.1 rebounds and 6.1 assists. However, defensive regression and nagging injuries have fueled increasing uncertainty about the direction of the franchise.

Individually, Giannis continues to post MVP-level production. Still, his brilliance has been overshadowed by Milwaukee’s struggles and questions about how long he’ll have a shaky roster.

Meanwhile in Los Angeles, Reaves is having the best season of his career. He has acted as the Lakers’ third star during their 16-5 start. He is averaging 29 points, 6 rebounds and 7 assists with elite efficiency. Reaves also expanded his role on the ball and strengthened his case for a big payday. On the other hand, it could hurt the Lakers’ chances of ever using him to chase a superstar like Giannis.
