The Bulls’ trade proposal finally removes Jonathan Cummings from the Warriors

As the trade deadline quickly approaches, talking about Golden State Warriors forward Jonathan Cumminga it will only get louder around the league. He has been the subject of trade rumors over the past few years, as the talented power forward has been stuck on the bench in the Bay Area.

At this point, Kuminga seems to be linked with almost every team. He is an intriguing prospect with high upside. Constantly languishing on the Warriors’ depth chart, however, also feels like a red flag.

Still, a much-needed change of scenery could reignite Kuminga’s young career. Among all the teams, the perfect landing spot for him is Chicago Bulls.

The Bulls have been hovering in league purgatory for the last few seasons. While they’re competitive enough to avoid a complete collapse, they lack the ceiling to truly contend. They are currently 10th in the Eastern Conference with a record of 17-20.

Maybe now is the time to make a big move and seriously run on Kuminga. They could offer a veterans center Nikola Vucevic in a one-for-one trade.

Vucevic is a productive and durable big man. He is a top professional and a good teammate. But at this stage, he’s more valuable as a trade asset than as a foundation for the Bulls.

Chicago acquired him in a 2021 trade with the Orlando Magic, hoping he could serve as the team’s cornerstone. Although Vucevic put up consistent numbers, he failed to take the team deep into the playoffs.

The move for the two-time All-Star, whose $22 million contract is expiring, creates flexibility and signals a philosophical shift. That will open up minutes for Jalen Smith and Zach Collins, who are both younger than the 35-year-old Vucevic, and push the Bulls toward a clearer development path.

As for Kuminga, he will immediately provide offense for the Bulls, who have shown they can play well with multiple shooters on the floor. Kuminga and Matas Bouzelis will be an intriguing tandem with a similar style of play. Both are athletic, quick and fearless at the rim.

Coach Billy Donovan could release the full potential of the 23-year-old Kumingawho has long been overshadowed by Warriors forward Draymond Green. Donovan, who is no stranger to developing young players, could start a starting unit of Smith, Kuminga, Bouzelis, Gidi and Isaac Okoro.

The Warriors remain built around Stephen Curryand while the front office often talked about balancing the present and the future, the truth became clear: The window is now.

The addition of Vucevic will immediately address Golden State’s need for a productive interior presence who can provide offensive insurance when Curry and Jimmy Butler struggle. Vucevic, whose career average is 17.2, can certainly get buckets when needed.

He’s a legitimate low post option with a reliable outside touch, a skill set that will fit seamlessly into coach Steve Kerr’s system. His ability to shoot from deep can clear driving lanes for Curry and Butler. He can also make plays with his understated passing. Furthermore, he is a strong rebounder, an area where the Warriors have routinely struggled.

Landing Vucevic could also prompt Kerr to finally shelve his small-ball philosophy, which, truth be told, seems to have run its course.

Perhaps more importantly for the Warriors, moving Kuminga, who they drafted with the seventh overall pick in 2021, will finally rid them of a problem they’ve struggled with for years.

The trade proposal seems like a win-win for the Bulls and Warriors. Kuminga needs a team that is willing to live with growing pains, while Vucevic needs a team that can put him in a position to win his first ring.
