The Cavaliers are finally showing their best defensive profile

Irregular and disappointing since the start of the season, Cavaliers came from hit rock bottom in Houston. Like a final drop after long weeks of bad matches, with an absent defense. Finally, a reaction was needed.

“There was physical impact and energy”, notes Kenny Atkinsonafter the meeting in San Antonio. “Houston dominated us and that’s where we were the strongest, the ones who hit first. Sometimes that’s what makes the difference.”

It was necessary because with a rather weak 3-point skill (13/42 on 3-pointers) plus Donovan Mitchell with only 10 units and 3/12 shooting, which was his worst output of the season, the Cavaliers could not count on their offense to take it away.

“We don’t need Donovan to score 35 points to be a good team”continues the Cleveland coach. “He and Darius Garland could throw 30 passes. I challenged these guys to make their teammates better. It was really a team win.”

A defensive victory could also be added. In just 28 minutes, Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley combined for 43 points and 17 rebounds. The other also blocked three shots, the last of which was on Victor Vembanyama.

The Frenchman (shot 7/16) had a difficult night against the Ohio duo, as did his teammates, who shot just 38% and lost 18 balls.

“We didn’t shoot well and we won this game by defending very well. Our defense didn’t let up in intensity. Everyone gave their best, on both sides of the field. There was effort, energy. We can do it like that. We just have to continue”Donovan Mitchell hopes.
