The elegant reason why Mac Jones broke out against the Giants

Mac Jones turned into one of his purest performances in San Francisco 49ers‘ 34-24 win over the New York Giants, finishing 19-of-24 for 235 yards and two touchdowns. With Brock Purdy was sidelined with a toe injuryJones stepped up as a starter and is now 5-2 in that role this season.
In a smart move, as the 49ers were closing in on the victory, Mack Jones pulled out so Adrian Martinez could take his first NFL snap. The quarterback confirmed a selfless gesture in his postgame interview.
“Yeah. Kyle already took off the headphones and I said, ‘Come on, Adrian.’ So I just kicked out, snuck to the side,” Jones said in a video shared by the 49ers on NBCS. “But I was happy. I think Adrian was going to go in either way, and they wanted him in there. But when they scored, you know, you just had to get the first down on offense. So when we took a knee, I definitely wanted Adrian to be there.”
Jones praised his backup quarterback and the rest of the room. “He was great, to be honest. He’s a good friend of mine. I just met him. He was a great voice in that room, along with Brock and Rourke. So we got a great room,” he added.

Martinez took the field for a final kneel with about a minute remaining, recording his first NFL snap. The official box score shows one carry for -1 yard, the standard stat line for a winning formation on its knees.
The moment speaks to the culture that Kyle Shanahan has built in San Francisco. Jones didn’t have to come out of the game, but he recognized the opportunity for Martinez to make his debut.
Jones got off to a hot start against New York, going 14-for-14 to open the game before finishing with efficient numbers all over the place. He connected on a 21-yard dart with Kendrick Bourne in a tight window and found Jauan Jennings for a touchdown in the red zone.
While Jones ran the passing game, Christian McCaffrey was the driving force behind San Francisco’s offense. He had 173 total yards from scrimmage with two touchdowns, rushing for 106 yards on 28 carries and adding 67 yards receiving. The performance was historical, like McCaffrey broke Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk’s record for most punt-and-receive games.
The win moved San Francisco to 6-3, keeping them firmly in the NFC playoff race.
Martinez, a former Kansas State standout, was elevated to the backup spot while Purdy is inactive. Now he has his first official NFL appearance in the books, thanks to a quarterback who made sure his teammate got a moment to remember.
