The ‘fearless’ rookie who impressed in his first career start against the Celtics
Although it was a disappointing outing for the Miami Heat in Friday night’s 129-116 loss to the Boston Celtics, there were a few bright spots, such as rookie Kasparas Yakutsionis. With Hot newbie giving them a boost in Thursday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets, his usage would increase, even if his name was called in the starting lineup.
Plus, Miami was hurt coming into the contest Tyler HerroNikola Jovic and Pele Larson, who recently missed time, Davion Mitchell and Andrew Wiggins would pass late and come out later for the game in Boston. That gave Yakutsionis the go-ahead eight minutes into Thursday’s game, and he impressed, recording 17 points with six rebounds, four assists and just one turnover.
The 19-year-old was selected 20th overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, where he had an up-and-down Summer League, and an injury-riddled training camp and preseason. Having spent time in the G League, he came in ready to contribute and has done so so far, as in addition to the offense, Yakutsionis gives the team defensive intensity and fearlessness that Erik Spoelstra loves
“I really like what he’s done the last two games and what he’s done, you know, eight games in the G League, he gives us energy, pace, he’s fearless about his game, aggressiveness, getting into the paint, he’s really improved his three-point shooting,” Spoelstra said via the team’s YouTube page. “That was definitely a bright spot. With Davion out, (Jakucionis) got a chance and really played well. And there’s a lot of things that happen in a game like this, that encouraged me.”
Heat’s Kasparas Yakutsionis described as ‘fighter’

As Yakutionis is one of the many aspects they have was encouraging for the heathis shooting numbers, especially from three-point range, were admirable on Friday. Overall from the field, the rookie made 5 of 13, all five from deep, as he still has work to do.
However, his tough and physical style of play caught the attention of many, especially the Miami captain Bam Adebayosaying that Yakutsionis is a “fighter”.
“He’s a fighter. He’s a competitor,” Adebayo said. “You see that. You know, he wants to win. He wants to compete. He wants to be involved. You love when young guys are like that, when they have that mentality where, you know, they want to come in, they want to get into the fight, they want to be a part of it and do whatever it takes to win.”
It was no doubt exciting for Yakutsionis to get his first meaningful minutes with the Heat, calling it a “dream” and describing how “quick” it was.
“It’s a dream to compete against the best,” Cass said. “It happened fast, you know, like you never know when an opportunity is coming. One time (Mitchell) was out there and he just had to be ready, every time they needed me, and I’m trying to stay ready every time they needed me.”
Yakutsionis and Miami look to get back on track in their next game coming up Sunday against the New York Knicks.
