The firing of the GM was expected, but the timing was a blind spot

The Minnesota Vikings announced that they Adofo-Manach’sgener’s and on Friday. It’s a move that came as a shock to many. However, the buzz around the rumor mill wasn’t exactly a shock to anyone in the organization or the league, but the timing was seemingly odd.

Reports indicate the Vikings’ decision to fire the 44-year-old former GM came as a shock just because of the weatheraccording to Alec Lewis of The Athletic. Lewis claims that those inside the organization, along with those in the NFL, are not surprised by the club’s decision to move on from Adofo-Mensaha. By the sound of it, many believed Minnesota would announce it much earlier.

“Talking to Vikings staff: This was not expected at all at this point in the calendar. Many are blindsided. There’s certainly been a lot of tension in recent weeks and months, and a lot of uncertainty in the decision-making process.

“I should clarify: The move that was made was not a surprise to anyone in the building or around the NFL (agents, executives, coaches, etc.). The timing was blinding. However, Vikings ownership has gone through a pretty methodical process over the last few weeks. I decided it was time.”

Kwesi Adofo-Mensah spent four seasons as general manager of the Vikings. The franchise quickly named longtime executive vice president of football operations Rob Brzezinski as interim general manager. He is expected to hold that role through the 2026 NFL Draft. Minnesota plans to hire a new general manager only after the draft.

Typically, organizations decide to fire general managers or coaches early in the offseason, usually right after the regular season ends. However, the Vikings took a different approach and waited until the end of January to make that decision. It’s a bold move, but based on rumors swirling around the league, it may have been inevitable.
