The George-Markkanen duo spoiled Cooper Flagg’s big night (42 points)

Lauri Markanen - Cooper Flag

The Jazz like to play overtime in their den. After the Suns and Bulls, Will Hardy’s men declined Mavs in overtime (140-133) after another spectacular encounter.

Because this match turned into a remote duel between two young stars of this league: Cooper Flaggwhich offered itself a new reference grade (42 points), i Keionte George (37 points), which came close to those established a few days earlier. Everything is arbitrated by the new big edition of Lauri Markkanen (33), with a non-negligible contribution from Kyle Filipowski (25) in the final.

Jazz has come a long way. Trailing for most of the match, he found himself in serious trouble 3 minutes after time, when Max Christie finished in the round (116-124). After that, the Jazz went on an 11-0 run, relying on the stature of Isaiah Collier and the grit of Kyle Filipowski, who scored 16 points in the final quarter (despite a few walks…).

The Jazz regain control but concede overtime

With his team at a standstill offensively, Cooper Flagg then pulled out all the stops with another left-handed finish that Markkanen headed back into the corner. But the Texans were able to pass at the free-throw line, where Flagg intentionally missed his second attempt, to allow Christie to fly off an offensive rebound and draw Ace Bailey’s 6th foul. And equalize on this same line.

Filipovski will inherit the winning shot. Missed: Overtime (129-129). Then the offensive collapse of the guests was confirmed, such as Cooper Flagg, well supported by PJ Washington, the author of a solid double-double (25 points and 13 rebounds) in particular, who lacked juice in the finals. Quite the opposite of the surgical Keyon George in his pace management and big 3-point shooter.

But the light mostly came from Lauri Markkanen, the author of the “tip” tap, before the big authoritarian slamming of the tap to close the debates. The Jazz won in overtime with a clear score (11-4).

WHAT TO REMEMBER

Keyonte George in great shape. New 30-or-more point outing this season – 6th – for the Jazz playmaker, who once again alternated between long range and perimeter offense. And showed confidence with the ball in hand. At the end of November, he had a hellish match against the Rockets (0 points, 8 turnovers). From this meeting, he was unsustainable in scoring. Already the author of 39 points (a career high) in his last game against the Grizzlies, he averaged 26.5 points in November with very good percentages (48%, including 43.6% on 3-pointers).

Cooper Flagg in another dimension. Anthony Davis absent, the rookie has taken the Mavs on his shoulders like never before this season: his strikeout volume has never been higher. Numerous left-handed finishes, turnovers in the back line, play on the periphery… The Texan demonstrated various offensive strengths by creating his own shot most often. Upon arrival, an excellent performance with 42 points (13/27 shooting, 15/20 shooting), 7 rebounds and 6 assists, only contrasted with a weak impact in overtime and his team’s loss.

Jazz virtually in “play-in”. Thanks to this second straight win, the Jazz moved back into 10th place in the West with a record of 10 wins and 15 losses. Will Hardy’s men have not taken this 10th spot since mid-November. Let’s see if they can hang there over time, knowing that the Blazers (10v-16d) have just as many wins as their opponents tonight (10v-17d).
