The Knicks are interested in a Mavericks trade, but there’s a problem

The New York Knicks he may have won two games in a row, but there it is general feeling of dissatisfaction both among fans and among team members. After all, this was supposed to be the year the Knicks dominated the Eastern Conference amid the projected defection of some of their rivals. But instead, they sit in fourth place in the conference, behind division rivals Boston Celtics and Toronto Raptors.

This would explain why Nix has been very active on the trade market as for exploring options for how to improve the roster. And their wide search led them to the wings of the Dallas Mavericks Find Marshallwho has been impressive so far this season for the rebuilding Mavs.

However, the Knicks may have to look elsewhere for a trade, as according to NBA insider Marc Stein, acquiring the Mavericks forward is will cost high price.

“When it comes to Marshall — who is in the second year of a fairly attractive three-year, $27 million deal — Dallas is said to be unwilling to listen to any trade approaches that don’t include a future first-round pick,” Stein wrote.

This is consistent with a previous report from Brett Siegel of ClutchPoints, who indicated that the Mavericks “may be able to land a first-round pick” for Marshall. And that’s just not a price the Knicks will be able to pay.

The Mikal Bridges trade cost the Knicks four of their own first-round picks, an unprotected pick swap and a 2025 first-round pick (via the Milwaukee Bucks) that became Ben Saraf. They gave up their first-rounders in 2025, 2027, 2029 and 2031, meaning they’re currently stuck trading picks.

They have a top-eight protected pick coming from the Washington Wizards, though they’re unlikely to pass on that. That choice, given the protection on it, might not be enough to allow them to make a big contribution to the trade market.
