The Magic still enjoy the “clutch” qualities of Desmond Bain
Orlando has already had a couple of uncertain endings to games this season, but the one in Salt Lake City was undoubtedly the most complicated of them all. Because at the end of a full turnaround scenario, the Magic won 128-127 after overtime against jazzthanks Desmond Baneauthor of laying 0.6 seconds from the siren.
On a throw-in designed by assistant Joe Prunty, the fullback takes advantage of the screen to attack the circle.
“(Assistant) Joe (Prunty) created a good system”, explains the former Grizzly guard. “A lot of action led to Del (Wendell Carter Jr.) catching the ball, which allowed me to attack the basket. He told me to press the rim, I saw an opening and grabbed it.”
Another clutch gesture for one who already gave Orlando a win against Portland at the buzzer in early November.
“He knows how to execute actions that win”
But magic complicated life. Leading by 19 points and then adding 17 more in the fourth quarter, Orlando saw a Utah comeback, Isaiah Collier’s game-tying layup with 5.2 seconds left in regulation. In overtime, Anthony Black believes he’s giving up a dunk in transition before a crazy streak: Keyonte George hits a 3-pointer with a foul, then converts the layup to give the Jazz the lead with 4.1 seconds left!
Desmond Bain, however, allows Orlando to take over and Orlando gets the job done on defense.
With his 32 points and the game-winning shot, the guard confirms the bet of the Magic, who were just looking for his toughness and composure. What his coach, Jamahl Mosley, sums up: “He’s been through this before. He’s had these moments before. He doesn’t let himself get destabilized. He knows how to make the plays that get you the win. He knows how to make the big shots. He just does all the little things that are needed in these situations to be able to carry the team and make those big plays in the big moments.” concludes the coach.
