The Mavericks correct the omission by retiring Marco Aguirre’s jersey
A few days after the Bulls, it was the Mavericks’ turn to retire the jersey of one of the franchise’s former glories, number 24. Mark Aguirre. I Derrick Rose joined the United Center ceiling at the end of his career, Mark Aguirre waited 30 years for his first franchise to celebrate and add his jersey to those of Brad Davis, Roland Blackman, Derek Harper and Dirk Nowitzki.
“Imagining all these jerseys being retired without Mark, it didn’t make sense. It was unfair. I’m glad the management fixed this.” summarized by Derek Harper. For Rick Welts, the franchise’s general manager, it was urgent to right this injustice: “When I got here, the franchise had drawn very few numbers compared to most NBA teams. It seemed obvious that one number was missing. We consulted for a long time with everyone associated with the team and its history, and there was a unanimous agreement: it had to be done, and it should have been done before. To see Mark, his reaction, his family’s reaction, it can happen at the very least, but now it is extremely powerful. We are excited about it.
A three-time All-Star, Mark Aguirre was one of the best forwards of the 80s and was selected first overall by the Mavericks in 1981. He stayed there for eight and a half years, before being traded to the Pistons to reunite with his friend. Isiah Thomashis second overall pick in the 81 draft. Together, these two kids from Chicago would win two titles, and Isiah Thomas was there that night, to honor him and… make him cry.
The embodiment of the Maverick spirit
“It means a lot to me”, responded Mark Aguirre about the presence of the former leader of Detroit. “We grew up in the same neighborhood, he knows absolutely everything about me. When I look at him, I can’t hide anything.”
If Mark Aguirre was long ignored by management, it was because his departure from Dallas was tumultuous, and Derek Harper remembers that. “ I’m a fan of Marco Aguirre because I was there with him.”reminds the former leader of Nix. “The first word that comes to my mind is that he was misunderstood, personally and as a player. For some reason, Mark got a bad reputation that I don’t think is fair. To say that he left on bad terms is unfair. Maybe during the transfer Mark said something or some words were taken out of context. It is said that some people regret it today. That’s life. I respectfully object that we forget the past.
Ironically, that was the night his jersey was retired when Marco Aguirre was robbed of the Mavericks rookie scoring record (42). by a certain Cooper Flagg (49 points).
A beautiful symbol, and Jason Kidd is here to remind us what a great striker he was. “When we talk about greatness in the Mavericks, Mark is the example. He was the best scorer, tough, physical, who didn’t give up on anyone. He embodied the spirit of the Mavericks” concludes the current coach of Dallas.
