The NBA has banned Jaylen Sag from wearing a headband around his neck
The NBA is especially careful when it comes to headbands. In 2002, Tim Thomas tried to carry two, but the Major Leagues quickly intervened. In 2019, Jimmy Butler, De’Aaron Fox and Montrezl Harrell all tried “ninja” headbands, tied in the back, and that was also quickly banned.
On the management side, the argument presented is often one of safety. The fear is that the headband could get caught and cause a serious incident if it is not easily removed.
It’s probably this logic that led the NBA to ask Jalen Suggs to abandon a habit that is unusual to say the least: wearing a headband… around the neck. The Magic leader, however, only used the gesture for a few minutes, before returning it to his head when the match began.
“It actually comes from American football, that’s where it came from.”, the person in question recently explainedwho was a talented quarterback in high school, was even named Mr. Football and Mr. Basketball in the state of Minnesota in the same year! “I have nothing more to say. I wear it around my neck, and when I’m in a match, in rhythm, I put it on my head, and that’s what drives us.”
But for the NBA, even temporarily, this habit remains problematic and that’s why it asked him to stop.
