The Pistons are a little scared, but they respond to Golden State
Dominated in Phoenix the day before, the Pistons are much more rigorous at the beginning of the match. Despite the ten points of Stephen Curry (23 points), the skill of Duncan Robinson (4/6 at 3 points) and the altruism of Detroit allows them to take the lead (25-19). The Warriors hold their own as they go to the free throw line ten times, but remain at the mercy of Detroit’s full-speed offense (45-37).
La promenade de Cade Cunningham et de Jalen Duren
The deficit rises to +15 on Javonte Green’s three-pointer, and Golden State relies on the third and fourth shots from distance from Draymond Green (15 points) to limit the damage (54-43). With 13 points scored, the duo of Gui Santos – De’Anthony Melton (18 points) then allowed the Warriors to get back to -5, but the Pistons ran away again before the break. After Cade Cunningham (29 points, 11 assists) and Jalen Duren (21 points, 13 rebounds), Detroit does not give quarters and adds 16-4 to Golden State and takes a 17-point advantage (77-60)!
Cade Cunningham and his teammates continued their momentum and started the second half with an 11-4 run, dominating, time and time again, the Warriors (88-68). Golden State, however, is gradually getting back into its game.
With Stephen Curry strictly taking Ausar Thompson (7 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals) and Detroit’s defense, the benefit is Al Horford (13 points, 7 rebounds). Pivot scores seven straight points and controls the rebound to bring Golden State back under ten points (90-81). Curry struggles to find space and scores 10 points in the period, but Isaiah Stewart (14 points) keeps the Warriors at bay (108-95).
Buddy Hield and Guy Santos are rekindling the debate
While the Golden State star returns to the locker room with a grimace, Buddy Hield’s three-pointer (10 points) brings them to -7 (108-101). The Pistons do not panic and respond with 7-0 and return their opponent to the beginning (115-101). The Warriors, however, are not giving up. Buddy Hield continues, Guy Santos (16 points) hits from a distance, and the deficit is reduced to one possession (117-114)!
Hield even has the ball to tie it, but his bowl allows the Pistons to breathe. With less than four minutes to play, they managed to stay six steps ahead before Cade Cunningham’s return to the floor (122-116). The two defenses then tighten the game and without their playmaker, the Warriors have a lot of trouble making good shots. Conversely, Cade Cunningham puts the ball in his hand, and the Pistons end up avoiding Golden State’s possession attempt.
WHAT TO REMEMBER
– The start of the Pistons’ dream game. The leader of the Eastern Conference started the meeting with an offensive festival. The Warriors may have been switching defenses, but Cade Cunningham’s teammates had an answer for everything. They finished the first quarter with 45 points on 76% shooting, including 24 points on 12/13 shooting. They also had 16 assists on 19 scored baskets. A real demonstration.
– The Warriors are returning to their mistakes. More disciplined in January, Steve Kerr’s men struggled to escape the clutches of Detroit’s defence. The Warriors went 14 of 18 in the second and third quarters, giving the Pistons ammunition after ammunition. The latter scored 31 points on these turnovers and 25 points on the counterattack. It is difficult to take, even at home, in these conditions.
– Stephen Curry is suffering from a right knee. After 25 physical minutes against a gritty Detroit defense, Stephen Curry was forced to throw in the towel before the final quarter. We saw him grimacing after a basket plus foul by Auzar Thompson and a few minutes later, limping slightly, he returned to the locker room. It’s the same knee where he experienced discomfort in the first of two games against Minnesota last week and Monday. He played the first duel before resting during the second. Calendar conflicts mean the Warriors don’t play until Tuesday. That should give Stephen Curry a chance to be available.
