The role of point guard Cooper Flagg is not what you think

Will Cooper Flagg starts at point guard? The topic has been one of the main talking points in the preseason. Dallas The Mavericks’ No. 1 overall pick in the 2025 draft offers the versatility that a head coach Jason Kidd will use. During a press conference on MondayKidd did not reveal the Mavs’ official opening lineup, but said Flagg will serve more in a point guard role if the 18-year-old is listed at point guard.

“I think he’s going to be excited (no matter what position he’s in), it’s going to be a dream come true for Cooper,” Kidd said. “I don’t know if it really matters what position. He’s all about winning, competing at the highest position both offensively and defensively, trying to help his team win. I think when we watch him start at point guard, it’s probably more of a point guard situation. But technically we have to put somebody at point guard, so I guess we put him at point guard.”

The Mavs would have an especially big lineup with Flagg on the roster. The lineup would provide less shooting distance and overall play, but would give Dallas an undeniable size advantage while potentially strengthening the post defense.

Cooper Flagg will be joined in the starting lineup by Anthony Davis. Dereck Lively II and Klay Thompson are also likely to start. PJ Washington is also a candidate, while D’Angelo Russell and Ryan Nembhard could start at point guard if the Mavs decide to go in a different direction.

Dallas’ opening lineup doesn’t have to be their everyday strategy going forward. Kidd has a variety of options, so he can try different lineups to start the 2025-26 campaign.

Still, the NBA world is understandably curious to see what Flagg’s role will be in his first NBA season.
