The school is recruiting Ryan Byrd from Missouri State
Coastal Carolina football has moved away from Tim Beck after the 2025 season. The Chanticleers have now found their fourth head coach in program history – plucking Ryan Byrd from Missouri State.
Beard emerged as Beck’s replacement on Thursday, per CBS Sports’ Matt Zenic and Chris Hammer reporting on the move.
“Led by the 36-year-old Byrd, Missouri State — in its first year as an FBS program — is 7-3 this season against non-Power Four opponents,” Zenitz posted on social media website X, formerly Twitter.
The latter tag should intrigue Coastal Carolina fans. Beard has proven he can take a Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) program and win a gate. He will aim to reignite a program that once seemed on its way to becoming a Sun Belt Conference power.
Coastal Carolina lures defensive-minded coach from Missouri State

Beard becomes the opposite of Beck in his arrival on the famous green lawn. He brings more defensive acumen.
The 36-year-old previously served as the defensive coordinator and safeties coach at Missouri State from 2020 to 2022. He also coached the defensive backs at Western Kentucky. But Louisville (2017-18) and Central Michigan (2019) represent his past FBS coaching experience.
Beard’s first Bears team went 4-7, but has since produced two winning seasons — including 7-5 this season. Missouri State was also 5-3 in the Missouri Valley Conference.
He will aim to reignite a program that went 20-18 under Beck. Chanticleer’s previous leader produced mixed results — including lost beloved quarterback Grayson McCall that the College football transfer portal.
CC fans will be hoping Beard can produce similar results from the Jamie Chadwell era — who posted two 11-win campaigns in Conway, South Carolina.
