The trade deadline acquisition has ‘things’ to learn after the first game with Phoenix

PHOENIX – The The Phoenix Suns made just one move during the trade deadlinebut it turned out to be good. The team landed Amir Coffey from the Milwaukee Bucks and he fit in nicely.
He finished with six points, two rebounds, an assist and a steal in Tuesday’s 120-111 win over the Dallas Mavericks. He picked up four fouls, but that seemed like a microcosm of the game’s script.
After the game, Coffey felt comfortable, but he knew he should catch up quickly.
“I have a lot to learn, a lot to overcome, but at the end of the day, you still have to do your job,” Coffey said in the locker room after the game. “So those things will come. But I still have to go out there and compete.”
I asked Amir Coffey how he can play for free while adjusting to the Suns’ terminology.

Still, Coffey was able to play freely, a signature of head coach Jordan Ott’s scheme. Obviously, there are plays, but he wants players to feel confident in their roles, and Coffey fits that bill.
Amir Coffey has more room to grow with the Suns
Fortunately, the Suns had two days off between games. During that time Kofi was studying playsterminology, and simply where it should be on the floor.
Again, he is a professional, so he has an understanding of where to be. But there is also a need to understand the system in order to maximize one’s talent and ability on the floor.
With Phoenix establishing a solid rotation, throwing Kofi into the mix could stop what they were building. But his performance on Tuesday suggests he will fit the bill.
Shooting, defense and versatility are all things the front office and head coach Jordan Ott have been looking for. The All-Star break is right around the corner and that could give Coffey time to learn more ‘stuff’ and apply it at high speed.
