Thunder’s Shai Gilgeous-Alexander made NBA history after All-Star announcement


The 2024-25 campaign continues to be outstanding for the stars Oklahoma City Thunder point guard Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. The 26-year-old averages 32 points per game, which puts him at the top of the NBA. He surprisingly earned a selection in the NBA All-Star Game and he was named the starter, but he made history on top of that.

Sportsnet Stats pointed out another recognition Gilgeous-Alexander has moved on.

“Shai Gilgeous-Alexander First Canadian in history to be named NBA All-Star starter in back-to-back seasons,” Sportsnet Stats reported via Twitter/X.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s sixth season in a Thunder uniform is on pace to be the best of his career at this point.

The No. 11 overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft has started 42 of the Thunder’s 43 games so far this season. Along with a league-leading 32 points per contest, he is averaging 5.4 rebounds, 6.1 assists, 1.1 blocks and 2.1 steals per outing while shooting 53% from the field.

The 2025 NBA All-Star Game will take place on February 16 at 11pm ET on TNT. A a new format makes its debut this season. Instead of the traditional East vs. West all-star matchup, four teams will play in a three-game tournament.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander has been nothing short of impressive all season, but where does he stack up against the other top players when it comes to the MVP race?

According to Sean Powell of NBA.com, Gilgeous-Alexander has firmly held on the highest bar again on the MVP ladder.

“The good times continue for Gilgeous-Alexander, while the Thunder, fresh off a tie with the East-leading Cavaliers, show no signs of slowing down anytime soon,” Powell wrote. “Same goes for Gilgeous-Alexander as he’s only gone under 30 points twice this month (in scoreless wins) and leads the league in points and is No. 3 in steals.”

And the Thunder’s schedule gets easier from here, with a pair against the short-handed Mavericks, plus the Jazz, Nets, Blazers and Warriors. All of that gives Gilgeous-Alexander a chance to put up even bigger numbers.”

According to Powell, Nikola Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo, Karl-Anthony Towns and Victor Wembanyama round out the top five. The rest of the top 10 consists of Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell, Alperen Sengun, Cade Cunningham and Anthony Davis.

Gilgeous-Alexander continues to show why he is considered one of the best players in the NBA and why he will be so hard to beat for the prestigious award.
