Tirese McKay reveals VJ Edgecombe’s role in All-Star starter news

After an absolute tear in 2025 and during the first few weeks of 2026. Philadelphia 76ers fans were banging on the table – and banging on the ballot box – to bring Tyrese Maxey to the All-Star Game.

Always a quality scorer going back to his time at Kentucky, Maxey stepped up his offensive game in a big way for the 76ers in Year 6, averaging most points per game by a guard since Allen Iverson while at the same time demanding respect from opposing defenses and coaches.

Fortunately for Maxey, his hard work paid off as he was not only named an All-Star starter, but also earned the most votes of any American-born player. But how did “Mad” Maxie find out about this great honor? Well, as it turns out, that came with a little help from his rookie fullback VJ Egdecombe, who tipped off the cutter while he was catching some Z’s.

“Well, 2:00 p.m. is like when I sleep. So I fell asleep. Then the VJ called me several times so I could hear my ringing. I’m like, why is he calling me? And I answer, and he’s yelling and showing me the TV, and I’m like, ‘Okay.’

“And then my mom called me, and then I was like, listen, I’m going to sleep. I have work tonight. But I’m thankful, man. I’m just thankful for my support system and everybody around me, and I’m very thankful for that.”

Fortunately for the 76ers, Maxey didn’t rest on his laurels after such a big run, posting a career-high 29 points, eight assists and eight steals in the team’s Monday night win over the Indiana Pacers. And the best part? He and Edgecombe also shared a nice moment after the gameshowing that while they may not always agree on everything, they are a backcourt that Philadelphia can count on for years to come.
