Tom Wilson calls Kraken defeat a ‘kick in the teeth’

The Washington Capitals‘ heavy West Coast the journey hit a tipping pointand Tom Wilson made no attempt to soften the message later. After a 5-1 loss to the Seattle Kraken, the veteran forward gave a blunt assessment of where the Capitals stand as their playoff hopes continue to dwindle.
Wilson’s comments came with urgency, reflecting both frustration and responsibility in the locker room looking for answers.
“I think it’s a kick in the teeth,” Wilson said, via NHL.com. “We’ve got one game left on this trip, and it’s the biggest game of the year. So if we’re not desperate after this one, then I don’t know what to say. I think our group understands what’s going on here, and this is a big wake-up call to come here and get our (arses) in our hands.”
Seattle took control early and never let go. Jared McCann led the way with two goals and two assists, taking advantage of Washington’s slow start and special teams breakdowns. The Kraken broke a scoreless tie early in the second period on a power-play goal and poured on the pressure from there, outscoring and outscoring the Capitals for long stretches.
Jordan Eberle and Matty Benyers each added a goal and an assist, and Ryker Evans also found the net. Philipp Grubauer stopped 19 shots, rarely forced into tough defense as Seattle dictated the game.
Alex Ovechkin scored Washington’s lone goal, scoring his 22nd of the season and 919th of his NHL career during a short power play. Logan Thompson did his part with 27 saves, but the defensive support in front of him faltered, especially in the decisive second period.
The loss marked Washington’s fourth loss in five road games and highlighted a recurring problem — The Capitals haven’t won back-to-back games since early December. They now sit eight points out of the last Eastern Conference wildcard spot, with little margin for error.
Wilson’s words underscore the point. And the match on Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings isn’t just another road game – it’s a test of whether the Capitals can respond to adversity or let the season slip further out of reach.
