Trae Young contract extension ‘rumble’ emerges after trade

Recently, the Washington Wizards shook up their franchise with a trade to the Atlanta Hawks point guard Tree Younggiving up CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert in the process. Young vill give it to the Wizards the first-floor general they’ve had since John Wall left town, and the numbers to help Washington speed up the rebuild they’ve been stuck in for several years.
Now NBA insider Marc Stein has added some additional context what the future may hold between Young and Washington after the trade.
“…there are already rumblings of Young eventually securing a two-year extension from the Wizards … regardless of how much or how little he plays for the rest of the season, while Washington is desperate to keep a top-eight protected first-round pick,” Stein reported on his Substack.
Stein also noted that Atlanta’s “known reluctance to extend Young’s contract into the summer was the first domino that led to this week’s Trae-to-DC trade materializing before his eighth season as a Hawk was even halfway through.”
Indeed, the Hawks declined to extend Young’s contract last offseason, which in many ways looked like the beginning of the end for the partnership between the two sides.
Meanwhile, the Wizards have been looking for someone who can help them get the best out of some of their young offensive players, and Young certainly fits the bill, having helped the likes of Kevin Huerter and John Collins look like legitimate NBA starters during their time with the Hawks.
As Stein pointed out, it remains to be seen how much Young will play this year in Washington as he recovers from multiple injuries and the Wizards look to maximize their position in what could be a loaded 2026 NBA draft.
The Wizards next take the floor on Wednesday night when they host the Los Angeles Clippers.
