Trae Young sends a “tip of the iceberg” warning to Jaylen Johnson

The The Atlanta Hawks were holding the fort impressively absent Trae Young so far this season, currently at 13-9 on the campaign. Young was sidelined for more than a month after injuring his MCL against the Brooklyn Nets in late October, and since then, Jaylen Johnson played at the All-NBA level to keep the Hawks afloat.

Recently, Young took it upon himself “From the Point” podcast on Johnson’s jump.

“That kid is a star … he’s got even more room to grow. What you’re seeing from him right now is just the tip of the iceberg. Obviously, he’s carried us throughout this run and put up crazy numbers and played super efficiently,” Young said, per Zach Langley on X, formerly Twitter.

Indeed, Johnson has used his unique combination of size, athleticism and court vision to become an All-Star for the Hawks this year, creating offense in both transition and the halfcourt for a team that has historically fallen apart whenever Young is off the floor.

The Hawks’ success without Young in the lineup has led some to speculate whether the team might be looking to part ways with its multiple All-Star point guard via trade, but Atlanta will certainly want to get a good look at what the team is like once Young returns before even engaging in those talks.

Still, Johnson has established himself as by far the best teammate Young has ever had, and many would argue he’s taken over as the Hawks’ best player moving forward.

Either way, Atlanta will take the floor next on Wednesday night for a home game against the Los Angeles Clippers. That game is scheduled to take place at 7:30 PM ET from State Farm Arena.
