Trae Young will undergo an MRI as Atlanta waits on the injury outlook

The Atlanta Hawks entered the 2025-26 season with. a lot of intrigue around them thanks addition of Kristaps Porzingis and a number of young wings who were expected to improve. In an Eastern Conference depleted by injuries to Jayson Tatum and Tyrese Halliburton, Atlanta was one team that entered the year with a chance to compete for one of the top spots.

However, all of that can only come together if the star is the point guard Trae Young remains healthy. Unfortunately for the Hawks, Young went down with a knee injury on Wednesday night against the Brooklyn Nets. He did not return to the game, which the Hawks managed to win 117-112, with what the team called a sprained right knee.

The team hopes it’s no more serious than a sprain, which would keep him out for a few weeks, not months. However, Yang will undergo an MRI on Thursday until determine the full weight from injury, according to NBA insider Chris Haynes.

The win moves the Hawks to 2-3 on the season, and Young had not gotten off to a great start in his first four games before going down with an injury on Wednesday. Entering this game, he was averaging just 20.8 points per game on 36.4% shooting from the field and 19.2% from 3-point range. However, he still had 9.5 assists a night and was still a table-setter for all of these Hawks offenses.

Porzingis leads the team with more than 23 points per game, but has played in only three of a possible five games due to illness. That was one of the concerns with him coming into the year, and it already showed up at the start of the season.

If Young is forced to miss extended time, and it looks like he will, expect Nickeil Alexander-Walker to handle a lot of point guard duties. Keaton Wallace and Luke Kennard will also see extended time in the backfield. Whether they can do a good enough job of sustaining Atlanta without its star remains to be seen, but that’s a tall order until Young returns.
