Tree Young’s only focus is on winning championships

The The Atlanta Hawks have had a rough start into the 2025-26 NBA season, fell to 1-3 with a recent road loss against the Chicago Bulls. Play Tree Young had an incredible 17-1 assist-to-turnover ratio in that game, but it was another poor shooting night from the field for the polarizing All-Star.

Recently, Young stopped by Tonight’s show during the Hawks’ trip to New York to face the Brooklyn Nets, and while there, Young talked about why winning is at the highest level much more important to him rather than individual recognitions.

“Obviously the win-loss column is the biggest stat, the most important stat for me. Obviously I want to win a championship,” Young told The Tonight Show on X, formerly Twitter. “It’s every player’s dream.”

The Hawks hoped to make a bid to do just that this offseason when they added several intriguing pieces, including Kristaps Porzingis and Nikhil-Alexander Walker.

Both players have put up impressive numbers during their first few games in Atlanta, but the Hawks’ defense, especially in transition, has not been up to par so far this year, and the team is also suffering from Young’s annual shooting slump in October.

Fans were hoping that 2025-26 would be the year the Atlanta Hawks finally got off the merry-go-round that had defined them for the past four seasons, and it still might be — four games is clearly too small a sample size to make any sweeping statements about the team.

Still, the Hawks’ tendency to let opponents get into the game on defense has been alarming so far this year, as has the fact that Porzingis has already missed two games due to illness. Combined with a truly awful first few offensive games from reigning MVP Dyson Daniels, it’s easy to see why the Hawks have played below expectations this year.

Still, this is still the most talented roster Atlanta has had in at least a decade, and fans are hoping they start to figure things out sooner rather than later.
