Tropicana Field’s roof officially repaired after hurricane damage

Tropicana Field is not the home many fans want for their loved one Tampa Bay Raisbut it’s still home. After a year of hosting matches at George M. Steinbrenner Field, the American League East club is set to return to the Trop for the start of the 2026 MLB campaign. The team discovered that the roof, which was subsequently unsustainable having suffered severe damage from Hurricane Milton in October 2024. has been fixed.

Faced with limited options, the Rays sought refuge at the New York Yankees’ spring training stadium in Tampa. They reportedly paid their division nemesis around $15 million to use the facility, a disturbing situation for one of MLB’s smallest payrolls. Fortunately, the organization won’t have to shell out any additional rent money after the latest update.

Don’t expect the fanbase to flood the streets with joy, though. They still have serious objections to the team’s current residence, which is that it is not in Tampa.

Aside from this temporary stay at Steinbrenner Field, the Rays have been camped out in St. Petersburg, Florida since the MLB franchise played its first game in 1998. They see low attendance year after year, and the stadium is considered one of the worst in the league. There are increasing demands for a quick departure from St. Pete.

The Rays will remain at Tropicana Field through at least the 2028 season, but hopefully a move to Tampa Bay can finally happen in 2029. Fans have heard a similar story for some time, but a new ownership group led by Patrick Zalupski inspires optimism that changes could be made in the near future.

However, the current focus is on getting the Trop fully operational again. By all accounts, that mission is almost complete.
