The story behind Kobe Bryant’s pose.
In 2001, the LA Lakers won their second straight title over the Philadelphia 76ers in five games. At the time, Kobe Bryant was still a young guy coming into his own with Shaquille O’Neal.
That year, Bryant married Vanessa, much to the chagrin of his parents, Joe and Pam. As a result, his parents did not attend the wedding and became estranged.
It was the first time Bryant won a title without his parents. After they won, he sat in the locker room all alone, holding the trophy.
In the process, with his head bowed, he signaled a sense of emptiness and hurt mixed with triumph.
