Vancouver officially shuts down Thatcher Demka for the season


The Vancouver Canucks they get hit hard, in a relationship the health of goalkeeper Thatcher Demko. Demko will miss the rest of the season after surgery, according to NHL.com. He is dealing with a hip injury.

“After consultation with our team doctors and outside specialists, Thatcher Demko will be shut down until the end of the year,” Canucks general manager Patrick Olwin said on Tuesday, the portal reports. “Thatcher will undergo surgery next week on an injury unrelated to the one that sidelined him last season. After rehabbing, he will be ready for the start of training camp in September.”

Demko has not played for Vancouver since January 10. The goaltender posted a .897 save percentage this year and was shut out in 20 games.

“It’s always tough news,” Canucks defenseman Tyler Myers said. “It’s definitely not what he was hoping for this season, but given where we are right now, I think it’s a great time to take care of things and come next year feeling good and that’s a big reason why I say in a lot of ways, I’m just happy he’s got the opportunity.”

The Canucks are having a rough year, going 17-30-5.

Vancouver is now expected to play Kevin Lankinen as the starting goaltender after losing Demko. This season, Lankinen appeared in 28 games with seven wins.

The The Canucks have been decimated by injuries this season. As a result, the club struggled to collect points. Vancouver has now lost 13 of their last 14 games.

Demko’s teammates are hoping for a speedy recovery.

“You want ‘Demer’ in the lineup, but I think it’s a good opportunity for him to get 100 percent, come in ready next year, and he’ll have time that I don’t think he’s had in the past to do that,” Myers said. “So in a lot of ways I’m happy for him. I know it’s tough, but I’m excited for what’s going to come out of it.”

Vancouver next plays against the San Jose Sharks on Tuesday night.
