Victor Vembanyama’s 500th career block is a beautiful thing

Victor Vembanyama was one of the best rim protectors in the NBA since San Antonio Spurs drafted him first overall back in 2023. He wasted no time in becoming the most feared shot blocker in the entire association, and in fact, has now passed the 500-block mark for his career. This is no mean feat considering he has missed a lot of time with injuries over the past two seasons.

On Monday night, in a disappointing 119-98 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder, Wembanjama recorded his 500th career block. And he did it in such an emphatic way; with 9:02 left in the second quarter, the Spurs star hit a three-pointer from the corner from whom else but his nemesis Chet Holmgren.

Vembanjama was not shy throwing sneaky shots at Holmgren in the past, and the Thunder center’s shot has to be good for the Spurs star.

However, Vembanjama will be very disappointed that Spurs lost the game in the way they couldn’t withstand a third quarter thunderstorm.

The Spurs big man had an injury scare late in the third when he clutched his knee, but returned to the game in the fourth quarter. He finished the night with 17 points, seven rebounds and just one rebound.

The Spurs’ dominance over the Thunder this season has come to an end

The Spurs won the first three matches against the Thunder this season, and it looked like they figured out what it took to stop the reigning champions. However, even with San Antonio at near full strength and Devin Vassell the only one on the sidelines, they couldn’t stop the bleeding as OKC ran away with the game in the third quarter.

They will then look to get back to their winning ways on Thursday when they face the Milwaukee Bucks at home at 8:00 PM ET
