Victor Vembanyama’s wild layup leaves fans baffled

There is a reason why San Antonio Spurs‘ rising star Victor Vembanyama nicknamed “Alien”. Since his rookie season in 2023-24, Vembanyama has left fans, media and even fellow players speechless with his seemingly inhuman exploits on the pitch. Victor Wembanyama was at it again during Spurs’ recent pre-season game when he left fans completely confused after making a stunning layup from nearly 20 feet from the basket.
The play took place during the Spurs’ preseason game against the Indiana Pacers, when Victor Wembanyama faked from the three-point line, made a defender bite and proceeded to drive to the basket for a layup, all in one motion without a single dribble.
Fans on Reddit the rest were confused how was that laying possible at all. One of the biggest debates centered on whether Vembanyama’s vacation was a trip or not. But after multiple looks at the play, Wembanyama just used his freakish athleticism and length to cover so much ground in one movement.
The No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, Vembanyama entered the league with a lot of excitement and attention. He was the 2023-24 Rookie of the Year, and he mostly lived up to those expectations.
Last year, his second in the league, Vembanjama’s season was cut short by a blood clot problem. However, he since then he has been able to return to court.
In the 2024-25 season, Vembanjama appeared in 46 games for Spurs, averaging just over 33 minutes per game. He averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists, 1.1 steals and led the league with 3.8 blocks on 47.6 percent shooting from the field, 35.2 percent from the three-point line and 83.6 percent from the free throw line.
During the offseason, Wembanyama worked with former NBA star Hakeem Olajiwon, and so far in the preseason, Vembanja gets to the free throw line more and more often via the three-point shot.
