Victor Wembanyama covers a wild sequence by posterizing Derrick Quinn

The San Antonio Spurs entered their game against the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday looking to start a mini-game winning streak. They were coming off a win against the Utah Jazz after losing to the Houston Rockets. And Victor Vembanyama seemed to be doing his best to give Spurs another win, ending a frantic possession with a bit of a poster dunk on Pelicans forward Derrick Quinn.

The play came early in the first quarter when Victor Wembanyama caught an out-of-bounds pass from Stephon Castle, picked himself up and threw what could be described as a dunk right into Derrick Quinn’s face.

The whole play actually started with Wembanjama posting up Quinn on the left block, trying to get past Quinn to the basket, and missing a reverse layup. Castle grabbed an offensive rebound, was surrounded by Pelicans defenders and threw the ball to Vembanyama before falling out of bounds. Vembanjama didn’t seem to touch the rim on his shot, but just put the ball in the basket in front of Kuehen, who was called for a foul.

There was only one more a stunning game that has become the norm for Vembanyama and his freakish athleticism. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA draft, he possesses a rare combination of size, length, athleticism and skill. Now in his third NBA season, Wembanyama just made his second All-Star appearance and first selection as a starter.

He has appeared in 31 games this season, including 22 starts, averaging just over 28 minutes per game. He averaged 24.5 points, 10.9 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 2.6 blocks while shooting 51 percent from the field, 38.9 percent from the 3-point line and 84.6 percent from the free throw line. Vembanjama only came off the bench for those nine games as he had just returned from a knee injury.
