Victor Wembanyama gets a big update before the Grizzlies tilt

San Antonio Spurs superstar Victor Vembanyama will travel with the team for the Jan. 6 game against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Spurs say. He is considered day-to-day and will be listed as questionable in the injury update. Wemby missed 14 of the team’s 35 games this season and has been out since suffering a left knee hyperextension in a New Year’s Eve win against the New York Knicks.
The Spurs say Wembanyama took part in five-on-five practice during practice the day before their meeting with the Grizzlies and wanted to travel to Tennessee.

News follows what head coach Mitch Johnson expected just before the team’s final game against the Portland Trail Blazers.
“I expect him to travel to Memphis,” Johnson said at the time. “We’ve said it from the beginning, it’s day-to-day and it’s more than a few days away, so we’ll have to see how it goes.
It’s worth noting that San Antonio will host LeBron James, Luka Doncic and the Los Angeles Lakers on national television the night after their contest in Memphis. In the past, the Spurs organization has not allowed key players returning from injury to participate in both games of back-to-back games. They were wary of Vembanyama early in his career. During his first two NBA seasons, the generational talent missed 47 of 164 games due to injuries, however 30 of those absences came as a result of blood clots which prematurely ended last season.
This year, despite a calf strain that kept him out from mid-November to mid-December, the 2023 first-round pick is averaging a team-high 24.3, 11.7 and 2.9 blocks in less than 30 minutes per contest as the Spurs have jumped to second place in the Western Conference standings after failing to make the playoffs since 2019.
