Victor Wembanyama gets real in thrilling win over Timberwolves

Minnesota Timberwolves and San Antonio Spurs went back and forth in a spectacular final period between a pair of the best teams in the Western Conference. Led by two of the game’s best playersdrama built. Anthony Edwards scored 26 of his career-high 55 points doc Victor Vembanyama rebounded with 12 in that fourth quarter and finished with 39.
With the Spurs winning 126-123, ClutchPoint asked Wembey if, given the above circumstances, it was as fun a game as he’s been in this season.

Vembanjama and the Spurs enjoyed some wins in a season that continues to serve as a turnaround after going 34-48 last year. In addition to beating three of the top four teams in the Eastern Conference – it should be noted that they have yet to play the Detroit Pistons, who have the best record in the East – they famously knocked off defending NBA champion Oklahoma City Thunder three times. The win against Minnesota means they have now secured wins over the other top five teams in the West.
“This one is worth a lot because of the way the West is looking right now,” Wemby told ClutchPoints.
With that result in hand and coupled with a loss to the Denver Nuggets the following night, The Spurs have the second best record in the conference. The Nuggets are right behind, while the T’Wolves are fourth in the standings at 27-16 thanks to a loss in the Alamo City.
Victor Wembanyama talks about the win against the Minnesota Timberwolves
Although has yet to participate in the NBA playoffsthe first pick in the 2023 draft sounded like a player with experience in his second season.
“The feeling at the end of the game is the most important thing we’ll see when we look back after 82 games. ‘Okay, January 17th, did we get the W?’ You know? That is what we will remember,” Wemby said when asked about winning such an exciting competition.
“But right now, as we progress towards the next game, we’re not completely satisfied,” Spurs’ top scorer continued. “It’s a nuanced win because they were back-to-back, they had some starters sitting. Well, that’s why I say it’s a nuanced win. (There’s) a lot we have to fix, but it’s still a win. That’s the main thing I focus on and what makes me happy when the buzzer goes.”
The Timberwolves lost a close game to the Houston Rockets last night, even though Edwards did not play. In San Antonio, Minnesota erased a 25-point halftime deficit by taking a late lead before the Spurs stormed back for the eventual win.
“I mean, make me feel better?” Vembanjama repeated the part of the question centered on the fact that his team could hold on before answering further.
“I already feel good when the team is trending, but, yeah, it’s just progress. In my opinion, if everything was smooth, it wouldn’t be fun. Every team has its difficulties, and we have to understand that,” continued the 2024-2025 All-Star. “It’s about how quickly we can get over them.”
For now, count the Wolves as a hurdle cleared. Thriller marked Spurs’ first win against them this season, after two losses in Minneapolis.
