Victor Wembanyama is trying to get the Mavericks out of basketball

The The San Antonio Spurs are one of the most intriguing teams in the NBA coming into this season, and it all comes back to the third year Victor Vembanyama. The former No. 1 overall pick and French prodigy sat out his second season with a blood clot, but is back with a vengeance for the 2025-26 season.

Wembanyama absolutely dominated their season opener against the Dallas Mavericks on Wednesday night, leading the Spurs to a 125-92 victory over the Mavs to go 1-0 on the season. Wemby’s individual stats were insane: 40 points on 15-for-21 shooting with 15 rebounds and three blocks. He dominated from start to finish and helped the Spurs run away with the win, even earning a spot on the bench in the final few minutes with the game to go.

Dallas is one of the bigger teams the Spurs will face in a very crowded Western Conference, with Cooper Flegg and Anthony Davis in the frontcourt to join Derek Lively. That didn’t bother Vembanyama, who dominated whoever was in front of him the whole game.

Wemby’s 40-point night was not lacking in highlights either. Late in the first half, he lifted PJ Washington into the air with a pump fake and drove down the baseline for a double clutch reverse slam dunk plus foul.

Then, in the third quarter, Vembanjama sent Lively’s shot to the rim before bringing the ball up the floor and getting a 3-pointer and a foul on the Mavs big man.

If Vembanyama can maintain this level of efficiency and production while staying healthy throughout the season, he will have a strong chance to win the MVP award in his third season. The Spurs look like a great team that can make the playoffs in the Western Conference, and their big man is a big reason why.

This has already been the case, but Vembanjama is must-see TV for anyone with an NBA subscription to cross the globe. On Wednesday night, he continued to do things that NBA fans have never seen before.
